General Location and Information
Seven miles south of the Western Highways on the Chiquibul Road lies the turnoff for the Village of 7 Miles El Progresso where Ka’ax Tun Educational Centre is located.  While somewhat remote and without electricity, the quiet little village functions smoothly and contains two schools, four churches, a few small stores, and an Education Center and Park.  Here you can volunteer at the Park or in the village and experience life as it is today in rural Belize, or tour the Park and imagine life as it was in the times of the Maya.
 Ka’ax Tun Education Center
The Ka’ax Tun Education Center is located at the end of the road through the village.  It covers 20 acres and is located on a rocky hilltop which appears to have been a Mayan ceremonial site.  Amid the boulders and limestone formations, you will find Maya artifacts and the remains of Maya structures.  New to the site, as part of the Education Center, you will find a classroom building with a whiteboard and other teaching aids, as well as a fully plumbed restroom.  A kitchen is planned for December 2009.  The facility is open to individuals for tours, and to groups for classes and camping
 
Village of 7 Miles El Progresso

Volunteer opportunities abound within the Village of 7 Miles El Progresso.  Help is appreciated at all levels in the schools, and the local farmers can always use an extra hand and you can help out at the Educational Centre. Local women are delighted to show you how they complete their domestic tasks each day and let you try your hand at doing laundry without a washing machine or making a perfectly round tortilla using only your hand and a plastic grocery bag.  For a small daily fee, you can eat, work, and live with a local host family or you have a choice of staying at small lodges a few minutes from the Park.
